Dr. Debra Jackson’s essay “Utopian Fantasy and the Politics of Difference,” published in World of Warcraft and Philosophy: The Wrath of the Philosopher King (Eds. Cuddy and Nordlinger, Open Court, 2009), investigates the the charge that the popular video game, World of Warcraft, is racist and sexist. She argues that the social structure of WoW achieves a liberal vision of race- and gender-equality like that aimed for by American political philosopher, John Rawls, nevertheless, racism and sexism is manifest through player engagement with the game.
