Steven Frye, Professor of English, Publishes the Cambridge Companion to Cormac McCarthy

Cambridge Companion to Cormac McCarthyThe latest collection of critical essays on the Pulitzer Prize and National Book Award winning author, Cormac McCarthy, was conceptualized, compiled, and edited by Professor of English, Steven Frye. The Cambridge Companion to Cormac McCarthy (Cambridge UP) contains Frye’s Introduction and his essay, “Blood Meridian and the Poetics of Violence.” The volume includes essays from Stacey Peebles (Centre College), Pierre Lagayette (University of Paris, Sorbonne), Brian Evenson (Brown University), and Timothy Parrish (Florida State University, among many others.

CSUB’s “Camp to Campus” documentary premiered Feb. 5th; available for free screenings

Camp to CampusThe “Camp to Campus” documentary premiered at CSUB on February 5, 2013, in the Dore Theatre. The 90-minute film focuses on first-generation college graduates who come from a migrant labor background.

The “Camp to Campus ” project is funded by a $10,000 grant from Cal Humanities’ Community Stories Fund, along with $15,000 in matching funds from CSUB. In the spring of 2012, a diverse group of more than 50 people responded to an initial survey. They shared their experiences of growing up as the children of migrant laborers-some living in labor camps, and some working in the fields themselves- making the journey to college, and succeeding there.

During early December 2012, Professor Charles MacQuarrie of the Department of English, and his daughter Quiller, gave a series of lectures for Smithsonian Journeys on a transatlantic cruise originating in London and then sailing to Paris, Lisbon, Tenerife, and landing in Miami. They spoke on Sea Gods of the World, Alcohol in the Classical World, Water Monsters and Sea Monsters in World Myth, The History of Tattooing, and Ovid’s Metamorphoses.
